Katia had spent the better part of the sunny Saturday afternoon out at the local arcade, occupying herself with games and the company of her best friend, Mark Hamptom. She had spent the day loading up on sugar and socialization, and as she had on so many other occasions, Katia lost track of time while having fun at this place.

Her grandparents who had raised her just like their own daughter, had imposed a modest curfew on the young woman. She was supposed to be in by ten thirty every weekend, and by ten o'clock on school nights. It was not an unusual thing for Katia to lose track of what she was doing however, so when it came up on 11:00 p,.m, Katia quickly grabbed her backpack, lept onto her bike, and started peddling the three blocks it would take for her to arrive home.

It was unusually quiet as Katia stepped inside the small apartment that she shared with her grandparents. Katia did not think anything of it at first, as she used her house key to grant her entrance into the house, sliding inside the place, and closing the door behind her. She figured that her grandparents had mostly likely merely drifted off to sleep early.
